Your Own Thoughts, Ideas, and Feelings

Senior Show 2024

This is a show about experiencing moments of embodiment through the creation of art. Feeling the graze of fabric against skin, examining societal concepts of beauty, exploring hidden and revealed emotions, and exalting the overwhelming capacities of the natural world are the guiding principles of the works.

Most of the pieces are visually centered around the human form enveloped in fabric. The inspiration behind this is the moment

when fabric brushes against the skin. It is something that I use as a meditation, to bring myself back into my body, over critiquing physical appearance.

Emotional exploration used in the creation of the pieces comes from my various admiration and joy about theater, dance, music, and above all, literature. From ancient Greek portrayals of goddesses through statues, the fabric stems from the richly painted depictions of Renaissance gowns, and the amount of layering and ornamentation from Victorian era fashion. Regardless of effect, these sources are the foundational elements of my concept of feminine beauty.

The rush of wind and rain, and on my face also draws me back into being centered in my body through nature. How rain sits on my eyelashes reminds me of windowpane wings of a butterfly. Wind brushing the hair away from the back of my neck enchants me. In “A withered maple leaf has left its branch and is falling to the ground” and “Its movements resemble those of a butterfly in flight”, the emotional experience is connected to being overwhelmed by nature, how foliage envelopes the figures and their forms disappear.

Each piece encourages the viewer to be awake to the sensation and perhaps even altered by an encounter with nature and the arts, with the hope of experiencing the awe and joy of being satisfied in one’s own body.
